Character & Charisma #8

Beyond Schools is a project by Sakar Foundation that aims to help youth learn about soft skills, ranging from setting boundaries to self care. This summer in India I helped record videos and present at schools specifically focused around healthy relationships The presentations focused on the differences between healthy and unhealthy relationships and featured various activities to keep the students engaged. I created engaging activities alongside the other presenters in order to develop these topics and put them into real scenarios, making what we were discussing more personal to the students. My favorite activity was the one where we prompted students to put hurtful words on paper, crumple it up, and then try making the paper look whole and unwrinkled again. The moral of it was supposed to show that words that you say to yourself and others cannot be undone and they have a lasting impact. It was really inspiring to see the young children understand this message, and I was proud of the way that they received it and hope that they take this with them in their future.

This message was especially inspiring to me because of my experience with bullying. In elementary school, many people would make fun of my eyes because I had Ptosis, which caused my eyelids to droop. I had surgery for it when I was younger, but it has always been a little visible and has gotten consistently worse. While I haven’t been bullied for it in recent years, the feelings and words of the people who bullied me for it still replay in my head often. Even if it doesn’t consistently affect my life today, the paper anecdote was a good representation of how someone might not feel the same once they hear certain words.
